MAY 2011
THE NEXT MEMBERSHIP MEETING WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, MAY 3, AT 7:30 P.M. -- YES, THAT'S RIGHT AT 7:30 P.M., NOT THE USUAL 5:30 P.M. AT THE VIRGINIA STREET THEATER. IT IS THE ANNUAL ELECTION NIGHT, AND OUR BYLAWS INDICATE THE TIME OF THE MEETING AS 7:30, SO WE MUST ABIDE WITH THAT. REMEMBER, ONLY PAID-UP MEMBERS CAN VOTE. If you have not paid your dues, come prepared to do so, and funds can be exchanged before the meeting. As usual, the selection of officers and other board members is a critical happening for the future of the theater. The slate of officers is: Patti Stacy, President; Jim Goss, Vice President, Louise Montague, Secretary; and Leslie Smith, Treasurer. At-large board members nominated are: Hugh Taylor, Lee Cook, Monica DesJardins, Charles Stevens, Carol Bignell, with Earl Morris serving on the board as Chair of the Fundraising Committee. Nominations will also be taken from the floor as long as the person being nominated has given his consent. "STEEL MAGNOLIAS" WRAP-UP - This show was well attended and we are grateful to everyone who helped with it. Some operational funds have been returned to the Treasurer. The cast and crew were hard-working, and spent many long hours in rehearsals. It is very rewarding when large audiences attend, and are appreciative! OUR LOSS - WE MOURN THE LOSS OF FRANK SCHLATTER, VETERAN MEMBER OF RCLT, WHO DIED ON APRIL 1. He was very special to all of us, and will be sorely missed. MICHAEL SWEENEY, DIRECTOR OF "LEADING LADIES," our upcoming production, has announced the cast selections. They are: Jason Stewart, Michele Massey, Rick Fulton, Lynetta Zuber, Will Cass, Louise Montague, John Popham, and Michael Bozeman. Rebecca Frederick is Stage Manager, and Ysai Valdez is the Lights and Sound Technician. Mark your calendars now to see this show at 7:30 on May 27, 28, and June 3, 4. Phone 622-1982 for reservations. Matinees, 2 p.m. on May 29 and June 5 - no reservations needed. STORYTELLER BOYD BARRETT is set for his fund raiser show on April 30, at 2 P.M. and 7 p.m. Likely you will not receive this publication in time to make plans to attend, but you might. It will be a fun evening for all. It's at the Aldersgate Methodist Church at 19th and Union. We are very appreciative of Boyd and his hard work, and his willingness to make possible this fund raiser. Thanks, also, to Earl Morris for all his help, and to the church for the generous use of their facilities. Earl will provide a full report on this event at our membership meeting. MICHAEL VICKERS, CITY PLANNER, has indicated to Earl Morris, that he will include a full report on RCLT's project in his next monthly summarization of local building activities, which is published in the local paper. He missed the May deadline with our information, but plans to have it there in June. THE ANNUAL YOUTH PRODUCTION IS BEING PLANNED FOR JULY 29, 30, 31. Be sure to alert the youth in your family and neighborhood, to come out and audition. The show will be "Charlotte's Web," directed by Michele Massey. Michele is looking for Adults as well as youth to fill many on-stage roles! Auditions are set of May 28, 2 p.m., and May 30 at 7 p.m. at our Virginia Street theater. |
JUNE 2011
THE NEXT MEMBERSHIP MEETING WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, JUNE 7, AT 5:30 P.M., AT THE VIRGINIA STREET THEATER. This will be the last meeting before the theater "goes dark" for the summer, as far as regular shows are concerned. However, there will be many activities during the upcoming summer months, so be alert and helpful as much as possible. Attending the meeting is the first step so that you are fully informed about events ahead. After the meeting, there will be goodies and chatter in the lobby. LEADING LADIES HELD ITS OPENING NIGHT, MAY 27. It's a delightful comedy, sure to please any audience. Michael Sweeney is the director, with Wayne Langston serving as his assistant. They are following the directorial guidelines of the late Frank Schlatter, who had been scheduled for the director's role. Additional evening performances at 7:30 are scheduled for June 3 and 4. Reservations should be made by phoning 622-1982. Set for June 5, is the final 2 p.m. matinee, no reservations needed. Invite your family, friends, co-workers, club members, etc., to attend. They will be provided some fine entertainment in air-conditioned comfort. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for full-time students. For groups of ten or more, the price is dropped to $8 for adults; $5 for students. Plan now to attend! "CHARLOTTE'S WEB" is the upcoming summer show, which we have usually designated as the "Youth Production." However, in selecting this play, a girl, age 10, plus a cast of older youths, and some adults will be used. Auditions were held on May 28 and May 30. The director will be Michele Massey. If you missed the auditions, check with Michele, phone 420-2232. NEW BUILDING COMMITTEE CHAIR JIM GOSS reports that Mike Bozeman, our prospective general contractor, is working on the figures necessary to apply for our building permit for Phase 1 of reconstruction. Member Earl Morris advises that Michael Vickers, who reports on local building projects for the Roswell Record, will provide information on the renovation progress of our "new theater" in his next article. Watch for this report and, even better, attend our monthly meeting and hear all the latest news on the project! CURTAINS RISING CHAIR LOUISE MONTAGUE, AND HER GROUP, would like members to suggest short, but lively (cornball? audience participation? etc.) plays that might be suitable material for the annual Curtains Rising evening. The date is usually in August, but we need to get things scheduled as soon as possible. If you have ideas, talk to Louise. FUTURE EVENTS: The 2012 Centennial Committee has asked for RCLT help. Edie Stevens is coordinating our possible assistance. On May 5, 2012, they desire a melodrama performed outdoors at Cielo Grande. On Oct. 28, 2012, they wish costumed performers to give biographical data on the life of Roswell's early citizens, which will likely be done at the supposed gravesites of these persons. If you are interested in being involved, contact Edie at this E-mail address: edietv@yahoo.com. Our cooperation would provide excellent exposure for RCLT, provide some fine experience, and help the community.

AUGUST 2011
"CHARLOTTE'S WEB" WILL JUST BE OPENING WHEN YOU GET THIS MISSIVE. This play, directed by Rebecca Frederick, will feature many of the young people who earlier attended our training session. The play will have only three performances: July 29, and 30 at 7:30 p.m., with at 2 p.m. matinee on July 30. Admission is $5 for EACH ATTENDEE, regardless of age, payable at the door. Don't miss this production! CONGRATULATIONS to all those who were involved ion "Leading Ladies." It was fun, and the audiences thoroughly enjoyed it. NOW IN REHEARSAL IS THE FIRST REGULAR PRODUCTION OF THE NEW SEASON - "BLACK COFFEE," AN EARLY AGATHA CHRISTIE MYSTERY. Curtis Folts is the director, and he is very happy with his cast, which features: Brian Landreth, Christine Bobowski-Powell, Louise Montague, Jacob Rhyne, Kjersten Toney, Philip Dorst, Scott English, Boyd Barrett, Peter Powell, Jason Stewart, Don James, Michael Wilson, and Jim Goss. Performances are scheduled for September. Watch for the next Footlights for the details. CURTAINS RISING - our big annual extravaganza, is set for Aug. 20 at the Sally Port. This fun evening will feature a comedy version of "The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged)," directed by Patti Stacy. A full dinner will be served, with excellent food, including dessert! The cost is $35 per person, and will be worth every penny. Because of the Shakespearean influence, attendees have been asked to wear Renaissance clothing, or dress formally, as they prefer. The affair will start at 5:30 p.m. with cash bar, and then proceed to dinner at 6:30 and the show. RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE AND PAID FOR IN ADVANCE – DEADLINE IS AUGUST 15, so be sure to make yours soon. SPONSORS NEEDED! We are seeking sponsors for the new theater seats. They may be sponsored in three ways: in the name of an individual; in the name of a business or other organization; or in honor of a deceased friend or relative. The cost for each sponsored seat is $200. Recognition will be prominently displayed in the lobby of the new theater, on our Website, and in the season program. For more information, contact Earl Morris, 625-0658. Let's talk about this to our friends, and to our business acquaintances. We need all the financial support that we can get. The Roswell Record has been helpful recently, so our new theater is getting some good publicity. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE SERIOUS STUDENTS OF THEATER, it is suggested that you read some good books on the subject, or check out some fine informational material on the Web. None of us is too old to learn! DEEPEST SYMPATHY to Patti Stacy and her extended family. Her father, Owen Patrick Mann, died on July 27. A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 1, 2 p.m., at Ballard Funeral Home. Danny Sons will be officiating.

We need each member to attend EVERY meeting, and be a part of all the decision-making. After the meeting, there is always chatter and goodies in the lobby. "CHARLOTTE'S WEB," our recent summer production, was delightful, and VERY WELL attended. Our hearty thanks to all who graced our stage, or helped in any way. Special recognition goes to Rebecca Frederick who directed. The young people involved gained a lot of valuable experience, too. CURRENTLY IN PRODUCTION IS "BLACK COFFEE," a mystery by the well-known lady of that genre, Agatha Christie. Curtis Folts is the director, with Carol Dishman serving as AD. Sponsorships can be by individual name, or in memory of someone, or for a business firm or organization. Make checks payable to RCLT/Seats, P.O. Box 305, Roswell, NM 88202, or call Earl, 625-0658, after Sept. 12. AT OUR "NEW THEATER," we now have a stage built, and the backstage flooring done, with work beginning on doors, etc. Work on electrical and plumbing needs is next, plus attention to the lobby. We are pleased with the progress, and eagerly await our move. NEED A HALLOWE'EN COSTUME? Some great costumes, from our own costume shop, have been delivered to Molly Boyles of "Once Again Consignment Shop." She rents many costumes and takes a small fee from us to handle our large number of fascinating garments. The remainder of funds received goes into our coffers. Last year, we did well financially on this project, and we hope that this year will be even better! |

OCTOBER 2011
THE NEXT MEMBERSHIP MEETING WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, OCT. 4, 5:30 P.M., AT THE VIRGINIA STREET THEATER. Our attendance has been a bit better of late but we would enjoy seeing every member there! Great things are happening at our "new theater" site, so be sure to attend and get a full report. After the meeting, there is always chatter and goodies in the lobby. VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO CURTIS FOLTS, DIRECTOR, AND THE CAST AND CREW OF "BLACK COFFEE," FOR A SUPER PRODUCTION. Crowds are never as large as we'd like, but we had some good-sized ones, and they were very receptive of the play. It was a fun evening of mystery with patrons often heard guessing "who done-it." If you were absent - your loss! Try to make it to every single one of our shows. We need your full support! OUR NEXT PLAY WILL BE "THE ELEPHANT MAN," WRITTEN BY BERNARD POMERANCE, AND DIRECTED BY MICHELE MASSEY STEWART. This drama is based on the memoirs of Dr. Frederick Treves, concerning the life of Joseph/John Merrick. Merrick suffered from a genetic malformation, which brought him the label of "Elephant Man." The title role will be played by Michael Sweeney (an Equity actor), with Jason Stewart in the role of Dr. Treves. Other members of the cast are: Michael Christopher (author/playwright); Renee Wahl; Bob Bergmark; John Ford (local film actor); Jacob Rhyne; Kinsleigh Harper (student of L.A. Theater Academy); Hayley Curry; Lynetta Zuber; and newcomers Jeorganna Simoes and James Norton. Evening performances at 7:30 p.m. are scheduled for Nov. 4, 5, and 11, 12, and reservations should be made by phoning 622-1982. Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. are set for Nov. 6 and 13, with no reservations necessary. AUDITIONS ARE SCHEDULED FOR "SMALL TALK," A MUSICAL WRITTEN BY JOE BONACCI, ON OCT. 11 AND 12, 6:30 P.M., AT PEACHTREE RETIREMENT VILLAGE. The Director is Louise Montague, and she needs 8 men and 8 women, hopefully with some musical and/or dancing ability. This is a musical comedy and should be fun for everyone involved. EDIE STEVENS REPORTS THAT THE CENTENNIAL PLANNING COMMITTEE IS SCHEDULING HELP BY RCLT MEMBERS. Plans call for our members to perform on Saturday. Oct. 27, 2012, to portray various Roswell characters of the past, now sleeping in the South Park Cemetery. Logistics are being worked out, but if you are interested in being involved as an early 1900 character, advise Edie at edietv@yahoo.com. THE MAGIC NUMBER IS NOW 50 - seats, that is. We have 127 seats sponsored, out of a total of 177. If you haven't sponsored a seat, it's time to do so. Let's get the rest of them handled. Earl, and many other folks, have been hard at work on this project, and they need to get the seating completed. Phase I of the new theater building's renovation is proceeding fine. If you haven't stopped by to see the workers in action, you may want to do so. What play will be the first one on that stage? At this point, we don't know, but it's gonna happen soon, you can count on that!

NOVEMBER 2011
THE NEXT MEMBERSHIP MEETING WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, NOV. 1, 5:30 P.M., AT THE NEW THEATER BUILDING, CLOSE TO HOBBS AND UNION STREETS. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO SEE ALL THE FEATURES OF OUR NEW LOCATION. Lots of hard work has been done to get us to our present status! A note from Hugh Taylor says, "It's an awesome sight to see the brand new "ROSWELL COMMUNITY LITTLE THEATRE" marquee shining and lighting up the parking lot. We should all be proud to see this project become a reality! Proud of our friends and neighbors, and fellow RCLT members, who have worked so hard, contributing time, energy, and funds, to make this happen! The building fund was started some 30 years ago, and now we are close to a GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION! HOW EXCITING!" Mark your calendar and be sure to attend this special meeting. "THE ELEPHANT MAN" is our next production, and the final show scheduled for our 12th and Virginia location. Let's fill the house every performance and give a fine drama, and our old site, a great send-off! The director of the show is Michele Stewart, with an outstanding cast of performers. There have been a few changes in the cast. Jacob Rhyne's role is now assigned to Pete Powell. Evening shows at 7:30 are scheduled for Nov. 4, 5, 11, 12, and reservations (622-1982) are encouraged, with 2 p.m. matinees on Sundays, Nov. 6 and 13. Invite your friends, relatives, co-workers, and all, to attend this sensitive drama by Bernard Pomerance. AUDITIONS FOR "SMALL TALK" HAVE BEEN HELD, and the show is, essentially, cast. One male and one female singer is still needed. According to Director Louise Montague, cast members are: Mike Smith, Ty Whatley, Edward Permuy, Jan Hudson, Denise Samuels, Christine Powell, Will Cass, Jim Goss, and Gina Amos. A pianist is needed, since the one originally scheduled to perform cannot do so. If you can help, please contact Louise. This delightful musical will be fun for all - whether on, or off, the stage. FOR YOU COMPUTER ACTIVISTS: In addition to our Web site shown above, check out www.Roswelltheatre.wordpress.com and Facebook Roswell Community Little Theatre. THE MAGIC NUMBER IS NOW 28. That's right, there're only 28 more opportunities to sponsor a seat in our "new" theater. Recognition of seat sponsors will be on permanent display in the lobby. Mail your check for $200 for each seat wanted, to RCLT/Seats, P.O. Box 305, Roswell, NM 88202-0305. A CHRISTMAS PLAY, FOR PRESENTATION AT PEACHTREE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON, has been located. It is an original work by our own Michael Christopher. This fund raiser will be a delightful addition to our regular schedule of shows. Learn more about it at our meeting, and be prepared to help out! OUR BUDGET FOR 2012 HAS BEEN APPROVED. We owe a vote of gratitude to all involved in that process, particularly our Treasurer, Leslie Smith. She has always presented her reports with a smile, whether the financial news was good or bad - and we've had considerable amounts of both! HAVE A HAPPY AND BLESSED THANKSGIVING! |

MERRY CHRISTMAS! DECEMBER 2011 HAPPY NEW YEAR!
THE NEXT MEMBERSHIP MEETING WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, DEC. 6, 5:30 P.M., AT THE NEW THEATER BUILDING, NEAR HOBBS AND UNION STREETS. COME AND SEE THE PROGRESS THAT HAS BEEN MADE IN PREPARING OUR NEW HOME FOR THE VERY NEXT REGULAR PRODUCTION. WE'VE ALL DREAMED THAT THIS DAY WOULD COME, AND NOW IT'S ALMOST HERE. THE NEW MARQUEE BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES, AS ALL FULFILLED DREAMS ARE APT TO DO! THERE WILL BE GOODIES IN OUR LOVELY LOBBY AFTERWARD. KUDOS TO THE CAST AND CREW OF "ELEPHANT MAN!" The show was enthusiastically received, and accolades have been numerous for all concerned. Attendance is never as large as we'd like, but this show really drew attention. Low bows to Michele Stewart and everyone who worked so hard on this production. FROM NOTES BY JIM BIGNELL, "LIGHTING ENGINEER" PAR EXCELLENCE: Lighting is important for any play, but two items should be carefully considered (1) lighting for the special effects desired and planned by the director and lighting technician, and (2) the normal lighting envelope. The actors should move about the stage, where generally the light is constant, the area washed in even lighting without noticeable dim, or brilliant spots. Those should be saved for special effects. The director and lighting technician must work to avoid distractions that wrong lighting can emphasize. With a little work, problems can be solved, and the lighting be a great enhancement to the production. Jim has successfully worked in RCLT lighting for many years, and he says that he will be happy to consult with the staff of any play to discuss the best possible lighting. He indicates that training sessions will be necessary at the new theater for light/sound operators. All persons should be aware of our capability, and Jim is willing to consult with all who desire his help. A FEW SEATS REMAIN - and the number left is 23, according to our hard-working Earl Morris, who has so diligently pushed to get the seats sold. We hope that those 23 will be sold at our opening day, or at the first production. FIRST PRODUCTION AT THE NEW THEATER IS COMING VERY SOON. It will be a delightful musical titled "Small Talk," and directed by Louise Montague. This comedy features a variety of music with fun lyrics and situations. Evening performances will be held on Jan. 20, 21 and 27, 28, at 7:30 p.m. AT THE NEW THEATER! Please call 622-1982 for reservations. Sunday matinees, at 2 p.m., are set for Jan. 22 and 29, no reservations needed. Don't miss it! "CHRISTMAS TREK" an original one-act play written and directed by Michael Christopher, will be presented at Peachtree Village on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 6:30 p.m. Peachtree is generously paying for the show. On Dec. 16, 17, 7:30 p.m., and on Sun. Dec. 18, 2 p.m., the show, as a fund raiser, will be performed at the Virginia Street theater. Admission: $5 per person. Performers: Peter Powell, Patti and Tyler Stacy, Carol Dishman, Curtis Folts, Brian Landreth, Arleana Powell, Jeorgeana Simoes, and Rebecca Frederick. 2012-2013 SEASON COMING, and four of five directors have been approved with the last one “in the works” now! Soon the Lineup and exact schedule will be finalized! |

JANUARY 2012
THE NEXT MEMBERSHIP MEETING WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, JAN.3, 2012, 5:30 P.M., AT THE NEW THEATER BUILDING, 1717 S. UNION STREET. It's the right time to put a New Year's resolution into effect - a resolution to attend every monthly general membership meeting of RCLT. This year is a momentous one for our organization, with the opening of the "new" theater, and all the plans that are in store. YOU CAN MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE. MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD AT EVERY MEETING! You also need to see the progress that's been made at our "new digs." RCLT is only as strong as the members make it by their attendance and support. So, don't let the organization down! Attend the meeting and add to the collective support. As usual, there will be goodies in the lobby afterward! KUDOS TO THE CAST AND CREW OF "CHRISTMAS TREK." The show was enthusiastically received by the residents of Peachtree, and a number of paid attendees. A special low bow, and generous applause, to Michael Christopher, who wrote and directed it and, also, to the cast who took on the chore of learning lines and rehearsing during the busy Christmas season. Attendance at the three theater performances brought out quite a few folks - some of whom may never have previously attended our shows. Every bit of public exposure to the talents of RCLT performers is always a plus factor. Thanks to everyone involved! GRAND OPENING FOR THE NEW BUILDING IS SET for January 20 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm before the opening of the musical “Small Talk”. Ribbon Cutting ceremony will be at 5:30 p.m. Be sure to spread the word so everyone can come see our new place! "SMALL TALK," a musical comedy, is currently being "polished" as opening night approaches on Jan. 20. Louise Montague, director, reports that the cast and crew have been working very hard and she is "feeling blessed to have them." There have been some delays due to the need for installation of various lights, etc., at our new location. This will be an historic event - the very first show at our new location. Let's make sure that we have a BIG CROWD OF ATTENDEES. Talk it up to everyone you know, and let's fill the house! Evening shows will be at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 20, 21, 27 and 28. Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. are set for Jan. 22 and 29. We want to see each of you at the show and, if you are available to help in any way, attend the meeting and offer your services. AUDITIONS FOR THE NEXT SHOW, “THE PRISONER”, will be held at the Virginia Street Theater at 7:00 p.m. on January 23 & 24. Director, Lynetta Zuber, is looking for 7 men and 1 woman to fill her cast. If you are interested in auditioning for an on-stage part, or even wish to help with one of the many backstage jobs needed, please be at the auditions. RCLT BYLAWS ARE IN THE PROCESS OF BEING UPDATED AND RE-WRITTEN. If you have some ideas on the subject, talk to our president about them. EARL MORRIS, OUR TRUSTY, EFFICIENT, FUND RAISER, has some new ideas to present at the meeting. Don't miss hearing about them. THE PLAY SELECTION COMMITTEE HAS ANNOUNCED SHOWS FOR NEXT SEASON. The shows and directors, are: "Fiddler on the Roof" - Edie Stevens, "Noises Off" - Lynetta Zuber, "Delval Divas" - Louise Montague, "Harvey" - Carol Dishman, "The Beams are Creaking" - Alethea Hartwell. The Committee is still working on setting the exact dates for this schedule. To learn more about the individual shows, chat with the director involved. Plan now to audition for a part. And perhaps, be a performing part of a show! |
