FOOTLIGHTS

NOVEMBER 2009

THE NEXT MEMBERSHIP MEETING WILL BE HELD ON NOV. 3, 7:30 P.M., AT THE VIRGINIA STREET THEATER. These days, every meeting is full of informational material about our plays, the "new" building, plans for the future, and many exciting upcoming events. Don't miss out on all this fascinating stuff! We need your input with regard to everything that is being planned. Mark your calendar, and be sure to attend. To cap off the evening, there're always goodies and chatter in the lobby!

KISS OR MAKE UP, the upcoming production, is in its final rehearsals, and Lynetta Bozeman, Director, and all her cast and crew, have been working hard to make it an outstanding show. Now, it's up to rest of us to fill the theater with an appreciative audience for each performance. Will you help by being there, and inviting your friends, neighbors, co-workers, relatives, and everyone to join you? It's disheartening to work diligently on a show, then play to empty seats. All of us can help to fix that problem! This delightful comedy will have evening performances at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 6, 7, 13 and 14. If possible, make reservations by phoning 622-1982. Sunday matinees, at 2 p.m., are set for Nov. 8 and 15 - no reservations needed. In our troubled times, a few good laughs are needed. This show is sure to provide them!

AUDITIONS ARE SCHEDULED FOR NOV. 11 AND 12, 7 P.M., for THE MONEY IN UNCLE GEORGE'S SUITCASE. This comedy, by Pat Cook, provides some insight into a dysfunctional family, and the uncle they come to visit for a prior reading of his will. Louise Montague is the director. The cast requires one man and two women who are 50+ years of age. In addition, needed are two males and two females, age 30-45, plus a young lady, 12-13 years. A stage manager is sought, as well as a sound/lights operator. Don't miss your chance to be in an outstanding family show, with a "G" rating.

NOT ALL THE ANGELS ARE ON BROADWAY SUPPORTING THEIR SHOWS! We were indeed blessed when an angel provided RCLT with sufficient funds to retire the large mortgage on our new building. No longer does the monthly mortgage payment eat into our savings! We are now concentrating on obtaining additional funds through gifts, grants, or any other legitimate means, to renovate the "old Park Twin," and turn it into a first-class little theater building. We're talking about thousands of dollars, but it can happen, with many people providing their financial help, regardless of the amount, large or small. Several of our members have stepped up and donated good-sized amounts, and we are proud of each one. There are other citizens in the community who occasionally donate to worthwhile 501c(3)(non-profit, tax exempt) organizations, and we need to make contact with them. If you are personally acquainted with such a prospect, and are willing to visit with them and make a "pitch" for their assistance, please contact Hugh Taylor, (505) 238-1697, or Earl Morris, 625-0658. Remember, most folks want the advantage of the tax deductions from such a gift, but need to have the funds in place by the end of the current year. That means we must get busy NOW!

SPECIAL EVENTS AHEAD FOR RCLT include a Christmas show of skits to be performed at Peachtree for a sizeable donation to the building fund. Vonnie Goss, directing. In February, a mystery audience participation play is scheduled at the Elks Lodge, with Edie Stevens directing. Again, it's a benefit for the building fund. Watch for more details later, and plan to be a participant.

The skit program will be given by RCLT members at Peachtree Village, a retirement center at Country Club and Montana. The first show will be presented on Dec. 17, 6:30 p.m. and it is for the entire community - and FREE OF CHARGE. The second performance, on Dec. 18, will be for the residents of Peachtree. This fundraiser for the building fund will be held Feb. 20, at the Elks, and will be an interactive show, with some audience participation. Needed for the cast are six men and four women, of various ages. There's an eccentric father, a spoiled, rich daughter, a weird nephew, a knife-wielding cook, a well-educated butler - and more. The dinner will include a NY steak, potato, vegetable, rolls, dessert, coffee or tea, all PLUS THE SHOW, at a price of $25 per admission. Attend auditions if you'd like to participate but, in any case, save the date and attend FOR SURE.

HELP IS ALWAYS NEEDED IN THE LOBBY, or for walking security patrol. At every performance, these areas must be covered by some of our personnel. If you would like to be involved, please let Louise know, and you will be scheduled. If you have been trained on our cash register, you are eagerly sought, since not everyone has acquired that skill. Please help us in these needed areas.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING, and each of you is wished the very happiest of holiday seasons. Remember that we are all striving to stay well, and particularly to avoid the various types of flu, so one more reminder to wash your hands often and thoroughly, and take good care of yourself by eating right, sleeping well, and staying happy. All contribute to your well being!

HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

JANUARY 2010

THE NEXT MONTHLY MEETING WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, JAN. 5, 7:30 P.M., AT THE VIRGINIA STREET THEATER. Now is an appropriate time to take your new calendar for 2010, and leaf through it, marking the first Tuesday of each month as RCLT meeting date. That way you will be sure to have a reminder of this important event. We need every member to be present, and to provide ideas and assistance in all we plan for the upcoming year. Please take your responsibility seriously, and be present for every meeting. Oh, yes, after each one, there are goodies and chatter in the lobby!

AN IMPORTANT VOTE will take place at the January meeting.  As discussed at the November membership meeting, the fundraising chair was previously made a member of the board of directors until such time as the new building mortgage was paid off.  The board therefore NOW moves that the fundraising chair remain on the board until RCLT raises enough funds to MOVE INTO the new building.  This motion will be voted on by those members present at the meeting.

"SKITS FOR SANTA," a program of humorous Christmas skits, provided some Yuletime cheer for about 50 people who attended it at Peachtree Village retirement community on Dec. 17. Some 14 members of RCLT put their hearts and souls, plus a lot of rehearsal time into it, and were pleased with the result. Making the seniors happy was a wonderful gift to them! Those who participated were Mike and Leslie Smith, Lee Cook, Michael Sweeney, Jim Goss, Bob Bergmark, Monica DesJardins, Patti Stacy, Michele Massey, Alice Wagoner, Susan Locke, Shirley Brown, Rebecca Frederick, and Vonnie Goss.

AUDITIONS FOR THE "WHO-DUNNIT" MYSTERY PLAY will be held at the Elks Lodge (1720 N. Montana), on Jan. 4, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. The play is "Death of a Doornail," an interactive show. Six men and four women are needed for the cast, according to Edie Stevens, director of the production. The play will be performed in dinner theater format on Feb. 20, at the Elks Lodge, as a fundraiser for our "new" theater building. The menu includes a NY steak with all the trimmings, including dessert. The dinner AND the show are a "package deal," for the reasonable price of $25 per person. Check the Web site, or phone 622-1982, for any additional help in obtaining admission. It's a fun way to participate in theater, or to simply be a member of the audience. Plan now to attend!

"THE MONEY IN UNCLE GEORGE'S SUITCASE," our upcoming production, is in a very busy rehearsal time, with things progressing well. Louise Montague is the director, and Michael Wayne Langston is the Assistant Director. This play is a family production, guaranteeing that no offensive language or action is involved, so invite all your friends to attend. It's a delightful comedy that will help to start your New Year off right, so please, mark your calendar right now. Evening shows are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 5, 6, 12 and 13 - and we'd like your reservations to attend these. Just phone 622-1982 to make them. Sunday matinees are set for 2 p.m. on Feb. 7 and 14 - no reservations needed. Don't miss this special comedy by Pat Cook.

IN THE WINGS is our next regularly scheduled show of the season following "The Money in Uncle George's Suitcase." It is the well-known comedy, "The Odd Couple, " the work of that master of comedic writing, Neil Simon. Auditions will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 15 and 16, at the Virginia Street theater. FEBRUARY 2010

THE NEXT MONTHLY MEETING WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, FEB. 2, 5:30 P.M., YES, THAT'S RIGHT, 5:30 P.M. AT THE VIRGINIA STREET THEATER. The meeting time was changed at our last meeting by regular vote. Remember, any organization is only as good as its members make it, and we need every single RCLT member to be present at meetings, and actively participate in all we do. Afterward, there are always wonderful goodies in the lobby, and lotsa friendly chatter.

COMING UP IMMEDIATELY IS OUR NEXT SHOW, THE MONEY IN UNCLE GEORGE'S SUITCASE. Evening performances, at 7:30, are scheduled for Feb. 5, 6, and 12, 13, and reservations should be made by phoning 622-1982. Sunday matinees are set for Feb. 7 and 14 at 2 p.m., and no reservations are needed. Admission is $10 for adults, and $7 for full-time students. The director is Louis Montague. Show up at auditions if you're interested in any of the roles or tasks mentioned.

"DEATH OF A DOORNAIL," A COMEDY WHODUNIT, IS NOW IN REHEARSAL. Directed by Edie Stevens, this show, with audience participation, will be presented at the Elk's Lodge on Montana, as a dinner-theater fundraiser for the RCLT theater remodeling fund. Dinner will open the evening at 6 p.m., and the enticing menu consists of a New York steak, baked potato, salad, rolls, and dessert, with the show following. The evening of food and fun is yours for only $25 per person (the Elks are sharing sponsorship). Reservations should be made by phoning 622-1982, or simply mail your check and registration information to RCLT, P.O. Box 305, Roswell, NM 88202-0305. Deadline for registration is Feb. 13. This would make the perfect Valentine's Day gift for your super someone.

FUNDS CONTINUE COMING IN FOR OUR "NEW" THEATER REMODELING! Of course, the funds do not come in large amounts, but every buck helps! Earl Morris reports that our own membership has stepped up to support the effort in admirable fashion. Latest to join this parade is Monica DesJardins, who has sponsored the Makeup Room at $5,000. So far, our members have donated $168,000, of which $90,000 went to pay off the mortgage, and $78,000 was provided for renovations. So far, the general public had donated only about $2,000, but we're hoping that will improve very soon! TALK IT UP!

                                                                                                                       MARCH 2010

THE NEXT MONTHLY MEETING IS UPON US! IT WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, MARCH 2, 5:30 P.M. AGAIN, YES, THAT'S RIGHT; IT'S AT 5:30 P.M. AT THE VIRGINIA STREET THEATER. We are just getting into full swing for the new year, and good habits need to be formed. One of these is making sure that you attend each RCLT meeting, which happens on the first Tuesday of every month. Make it a point to be present for them, and keep in touch with everything that's going on. Oh, yes, there's always wonderful goodies, and chatter, in the lobby afterward.

"DEATH OF A DOORNAIL" WAS A GREAT SUCCESS! Very special thanks to Edie Stevens, who directed it, and saw that everything was terrific!  Some 250 folks attended, ate a steak dinner, watched the show, asked questions, guessed whodunit with ballots, and got a chance at some great door prizes. One of these was a 12 mega-pixel camera and 2x3 printer, valued at $150 - and donated by Pecos Valley Chiropractic. Almost $2500 was raised for the building fund. Thanks goes to Bob Bergmark, the Elks Lodge; Parks and Rec. folks, who helped with borrowed staging; Jim and Carol Dishman for an outstanding set; all the cast and crew; and to Cheryll and Harvey Drury, Patti Stacy, Monica DesJardins, and EVERYONE who assisted in any way. We were impressed by the turnout, and so many RCLT folks were involved, we'd use up all the space just naming them! But you certainly have our gratitude.

"THE ODD COUPLE" IS CAST! Our next show has been cast and is in rehearsal. Vonnie Goss is directing, with Monica DesJardins as her assistant, and Shirley Brown as Stage Manager. The two leads will be played by Mike Smith and Michael Sweeney, with other male performers being Lee Cook, Hugh Taylor, Ty Whatley, and newcomer, Don James. Rounding out the cast is Michele Massey and Justine Michaud as the Pigeon Sisters! Start planning now to attend one of the performances set for April 16 17, 23, 24 at 7 p.m. (make reservations, please, at 622-1982), and Sundays, April 18 and 25, at 2 p.m., no reservations needed. Invite your friends, relatives, co-workers, etc., to join you. Let's fill the house, have fun, and help the building fund swell a bit at the same time!

A LOW BOW AND KUDOS TO HARVEY DRURY who recently devised a new doorbell for the stage, and also managing a way to get the letters on the marquee of our new building. Such interest and commitment should not go unrecognized. Thanks a bunch!

SOMETHING NEW IS AVAILABLE ON OUR WEB SITE! There is now a "donation button" available, and we are hoping it will encourage our friends and patrons to help us financially with renovating our new "home." Please pass the word along and see if this new method might be a special way to donate which will appeal to some folks.

ANYONE INTERESTED IN AN "OSCAR SANDWICH?" Edie Stevens is working with Schlotzsky's on designing such a fun and delicious item to go along with our next show "The Odd Couple," which features Oscar and his pal, Felix. As usual, we are all for any good way to put RCLT and its shows before the public, and this might work. Watch for a possible announcement on this, later!

APRIL 2010

We need your cooperation in making this project a real success. Enjoy a tasty sandwich, and later on, a good show at RCLT. Schlotzsky's is located at 4th and Richardson.

LOBBY HELP IS NEEDED for the upcoming play, "The Odd Couple." Someone could also be utilized on security patrol, which involves walking around the parking lot while our patrons see the show. PLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES TO ATTEND OUR SHOWS. ENCOURAGE ALL THE HARD-WORKING PEOPLE WHO MAKE RCLT SHOWS POSSIBLE.

MAY 2010

THE NEXT MONTHLY GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING is scheduled for Tuesday, May 4, 7:30 p.m. at the Virginia street theater. This is the time for the annual election of officers. The meeting time is designated in the by-laws, so we cannot observe our newly selected 5:30 p.m. meeting time. However, the following month's meeting will return to the 5:30 time slot, so be sure and mark your calendar. To vote, members must have their membership paid up, and if presented, payment will be accepted immediately prior to the voting. Most memberships expire close to the date of this meeting, so come prepared to make payment. Officer nominations are: President - Patti Stacy; Vice Pres. - Jim Goss; Secretary - Carol Bignell; Treasurer - Leslie Smith. Nominees for Board Members-at-large: Lee Cook, Monica DesJardins, Louise Montague, Michele Massey, and Hugh Taylor. Remember, there's always goodies and chatter in the lobby following the meeting.

"THE ODD COUPLE," closed after a successful run. Houses were above average, both in interest and attendance. The cast and crew had more fun than anyone, but it took, as usual, a lot of dedicated folks to make it all happen. We are grateful to every single person who contributed in any way toward its success. It may "Take a Village to Raise a Child," but it also takes LOTS of folks to put together a good show. A big thanks to all who helped, and a low bow to the cast and crew.

THE TEAM OF SCHLOTZSKY'S DELI-RCLT swelled our building fund coffer by a total of $140.25. This was all due to the work of Edie Stevens who "worked the crowd" at the Deli, decorated the place with RCLT materials, including photos of THE ODD COUPLE in rehearsal, and even managed to make a show reservation for a couple of Oscar Sandwich folks! As usual, her planning with Schlotzsky's, and her dedicated work, paid off. We got an enormous amount of good publicity, and it always pays off to "partner" with other community entities. Thanks, Edie!!

"BUS STOP," OUR NEXT SHOW, IS CAST AND IN PRODUCTION! Director Michele Massey reports good turnouts for her auditions, and she was able to select some fine performers for her cast. Cherie (the KC Lounge Singer) will be played by Rebecca Frederick. Bo, the rowdy cowboy from Montana, will be portrayed by Michael Ray Bozeman, while his sidekick, Virgil, will be played by Rick Fulton. The role of Grace, proprietress of the Bus Stop, will be filled by Sue Ann Carpenter, with Curtis Folts playing Carl, the bus driver. Will Masters, the Sheriff, will be portrayed by John Popham, and Dr. Lyman will be played by Will Cass.  Elma, the young waitress, will be played by newcomer, Kacey Sigler.  Michael Sweeney is the Assistant Director, with Ysai Valdez as the Stage Manager. Talk it up, and make plans now to attend William Inge's "Bus Stop," which will run June 11, 12, 13, and 18, 19, 20.

JULY 2010

REMEMBER, THERE WILL BE NO MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS IN JULY AND AUGUST, BUT IT'S NEVER TOO EARLY TO MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR THE NEXT MEETING, WHICH IS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, SEPT. 7, IN THE VIRGINIA STREET THEATER. There are plenty of RCLT activities to keep you busy during the summer - just see the items below.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE DIRECTOR, CAST, AND CREW OF "BUS STOP," OUR LAST PRODUCTION. They did a fine job, and provided some good entertainment for our patrons. We would have enjoyed larger crowds, but we have no control over that. Remember, word-of-mouth is the best advertisement we have. Talk up all the shows at RCLT.

AUDITIONS HAVE BEEN HELD FOR THE FIRST SHOW OF THE UPCOMING SEASON. It is a drama titled "Harvesting Stone," directed by Patti Stacy and Michael Christopher. Michael also happens to be the author of the play, as well. All parts are cast, and rehearsals will be underway soon.

RCLT IS HOSTING A YOUTH THEATER WORKSHOP ON SATURDAY, JULY 24, FROM 10 A.M. UNTIL 5 P.M., AND SUNDAY, JULY 25 FROM 2-5 P.M. Both sessions will be held at the Virginia Street theater. Youths, age 7-18, are welcome. The workshop is being funded by Xcel Energy, so it will be free of cost to participants. Instructors: Curtis Folts, Youth Director, and Philip Dorst, Youth Asst. Director. To sign up, E-mail curtisfolts@yahoo.com, soon!

FUN-IN-THE-SUN - and later - a party/picnic/cookout/potluck is set for Sat., July 31, at the home of Jerry and Monica DesJardins. EVERYONE IS INVITED. If you wish to swim, bring your suit and a towel, but be sure to also bring along your favorite pot-luck dish. We are, in general, serious thespians, so this is a party to provide some relaxation and camaraderie. Hours are 2 p.m. until WHENEVER. For planning purposes, it would be polite to let Monica know if you are going to be there, Phone 625-1338. Her address for this come-and-go party is 3203 Crooked Creek Road. Sorry, but she's not equipped for youngsters, so it's an "adults only" affair.

REHEARSALS ARE UNDERWAY FOR THE ENTERTAINING PLAY SCHEDULED FOR CURTAINS RISING. The play is "Radio Razzle Dazzle," directed by Louise Montague, and featuring Patti Stacy, Nancy Huelsman, Monica DesJardins, Ty Whatley, Michael Christopher, and Rick Fulton. The play is set in 1939 in a radio studio, with lots of laughs for all.

CURTAINS RISING, our big annual event to kick off the upcoming season, will be held at the Sally Port on Aug. 21. Social hour at 5:30, dinner at 6:30. It's a plated, served, dinner (no buffet line!), featuring Roast Baron of Beef, with the show, as mentioned above, following. The theme is a New Year’s Gala, and fancy dress is encouraged! Admission is $30 per person, which includes a full evening of fun. Phone 622-1982, to make arrangements to attend.
